Must-Have Street Foods in Jammu

Jammu, known as the City of Temples have enjoyed a rich history with unique mixture of alien races, ethnic groups and religions. Just like rest of the country, this rich cultural mix has influenced it's food too. Rich in aroma and flavors, you will get a mind blowing assortment of cuisine over here in Jammu.

Chhole Chawal & Rajma Chawal


Rajma chawal has wowed entire country already and city of Jammu is on top for that. Jammu ka rajma is a specialty served in most of the dhabas around the city and on highways. If you are planning a trip to Vaishno Devi or Jammu, you gotta have them.



Apart from rajma chawal, there is chhole chawal which will make you go crazy. Spicy chhole served with shredded onions and radish with hot steamed rice can be eaten in lunch, dinner or whenever hunger stricks you. In Purani Mandi right adjacent to the temple there, you can enjoy both Rajma chawal and Chhole chawal in their full glory.


Churan and Imli

Sardar di Hatti is a 65 year old shop selling all kinds of churan and imli. If you want to relive your childhood days, visit this place and order yourself some khatta mitha churan and chatpati imli. You can ask him to pack it as well!

City Chowk ka Kadah Halwa


Hot steaming sweet halwa made in desi ghee in early morning hours can make anyone's day better. Winter's are coming so you need to rush to the very famous City Chowk for this Kadah Halwa. This yummilicious sooji halwa is made by Pandit ji and he has been serving it for the last 60 years. There is another vendor as well serving steaming hot halwa in City Chowk, Jammu. Don't forget to visit them as early as possible, usually its all over by 8-8:30 am!


Girdhari Ke Kachalu

Made with sweet potato served in spicy sauces, Girdhari ke kachalu will give you foodgasm. Think salty, sweet, sour and spicy all rolled into one chaat, an explosion of flavors in your mouth. The eatery is located in Pacca Danga Jammu, a must visit for chaat lovers.

Kalari Kulcha



When you are in Jammu, you cannot leave the place without having kalari kulcha in Shalamar Chowk, opposite Bedi Cycle works. Kalari, which is a form of local cheese, is cooked in it's own fat and served on a kulcha with lots of spicy chutney and onion. You can have it on a bun too.


Pahalwan's Sweets

For everyone with a sweet tooth, Pahalwan's is nothing less than heaven. Located in Gold Bazar, Gandhi Nagar Jammu and in Wave Mall at counter no. 2 in food court, you have to visit this place on your next trip to Jammu. There is so much to relish on here at Pahalwan's. The very famous Jammu ki chocolate burfi, mewe wali kulfi and sund panjiri are a must have!

Rawalpindi ke Puri Chane



Made in desi ghee, puri channe from Rawalpindi sweets in Jain bazaar Jammu will make you go wow. Perfect breakfast to begin a day with a kick, these are served with Oria (aloo in mustard sauce gravy), alu ki sabzi, channe and spicy pickles. Eat them in the shop or ask for a takeaway. You will keep coming back, that's for sure!

Gulgule


Made with chickpeas, gulgules are served with shredded muli and imli ki chutney.

For all the Pakora lovers, there are several street vendors selling vegetable fritters in Jammu. known as Bhalla pakora, they are served with assorted chutneys and shredded radish. Served on leaf platters, have these bhalla pakoras while they are hot!

Jammu is famous all over India for Chocolate Barfi, Sund Panjeeri, Patisa and Rajma. Dogri dishes like Ambal, Khatta Meat, Kulthein di Dal, Kashmiri Aloo Dum, Phirni, Kashmiri Pulao, Dal Patt, Maa da Madra, and Auriya are the prominent dishes that have a special and mouth watering taste. Pickles of Kasrod, Girgle, Zimikand, Tyaoo, Seyoo, and Potatoes are also made.

You will find that most of the street foods are served with a generous serving of radish or muli in Jammu. Radish in Jammu has it's own unique flavor which compliments well with most of the snacks. It is a local delicacy and is eaten a lot as snack and salad. You can find various vendors sitting on the road side selling fresh radish with red chutney or spices in the season.
