Say No To Pollution This Diwali

Festival of Diwali is no longer known for being festival of lights, rather it has become infamous due to the heavy pollution caused by fireworks. The condition is so bad that entire city is surrounded with dense smog for several days. It is a threat to your eyes and respiratory system causing severe damage for years to come.

The saga of pollution doesn't ends here. It is an immense part of your life, you are just not able to see it. From the very first breath to the last one of the day, you are taking in endless chemicals and pollutants, knowingly and unknowingly.

Painted walls in the house, toilet cleaners, bathroom cleaners, kitchen cleaners, floor cleaners, mosquito repellents and so many other things are present in your life which can cause serious threat to your health. All these products which claim to protect your life from bacterial and viral growths are full of industrial chemicals. Some of these chemicals can mix with oxygen and turn into cancer causing chemicals and gases such as Formalin.

In 2013, after a study of more than 2,000 pregnant women, the International Journal of Public Health reported that women who used air fresheners in their homes were significantly more likely to have babies that suffered from wheezing and lung infections.

One study that followed 14,000 children from before and after birth found they had higher levels of diarrhoea and earache, while their mothers had raised risks of headaches and depression, all linked to the frequent use of air fresheners and aerosols during pregnancy and early childhood.

A 2007 study also found that using air fresheners as little as once a week can raise the risk of asthma in adults. The same report found that the risk of developing asthma was up to 50 per cent higher in people who had been exposed to air-freshener sprays.

Many air fresheners also contain substances called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), characterised by their low boiling points which mean they form vapour or gas at room temperature. Experts warn that these can increase the risk of asthma in children. And these air fresheners also include scented candles!

If you wish to protect yourself and your loved ones from the harmful effects of pollutants and chemicals, it is better to take steps right away. First get yourself and your loved ones particle filtering masks which can reduce your exposure to airborne particulate matter such as dust, pollen, mold and chemicals. My favorite is Vogmask which I never seem to forget while stepping out of the house.

Vogmask is light weight, made of non allergic fabric making it a perfect go to mask for staying healthy in this pollution. Diwali is coming and I do not want to suffocate from smog!

Apart from self protection, you need to make your house pollutant free as well since people spend more than 90 percent of their time indoors, air quality matters . Furnishings, upholstery, synthetic building materials, and cleaning products in homes and offices can emit a variety of toxic compounds, like formaldehyde. Indoor air pollution can also be caused by pollen, bacteria, and molds, as outdoor air contaminants like car exhaust finds its way into buildings. All of these are made worse in small or poorly-ventilated spaces

  • Use as less as possible chemical based cleaning agents. It will be better if you can try organic options available.
  • Plant trees around your house and indoor plants inside the house. Houseplants such as Garden mum, Spider plant, Dracaena, Ficus, Snake Plant, Bamboo Palm, Aloe Vera and such other plants can be used in the house to add a little vibrant ambiance and to purify the air.
  • Keep windows open while cleaning the house.
  • Make your house well ventilated.
  • Follow a sustainable lifestyle for healthy life.
  • Reduce carbon footprint.
  • Say no to fireworks this Diwali and many more to come.
  • Use organic fresheners and scented candles made of beeswax.

There are so many things that you can do for purifying the air around you. After all, breathing into clean air is something we all wish to do and running towards mountains for that one breath of fresh air is not the right way.....

Lots of Love!!!
XOXO
