OPI FIFTY SHADES OF GREY COLLECTION SWATCHES

By the nailsaurus

So you might have heard of this novel turned movie phenomenon, Fifty Shades of Grey? Even if you're not a fan of E.L. James' work, OPI have released a collection of shades for all the lacquer lovers out there to mark the release of the movie. I was very excited for this collection as I do love dark tones and I think grey is such a classy colour to mix in to any look. While I wasn't blown away by the polishes here, one does stand out for me. Read on for my swatches and thoughts on the collection.

OPI 50 Shades of Grey Collection Cement The Deal Swatch

CEMENT THE DEAL

Let's start with the Greys! There are 3 in the collection and Cement the Deal is the lightest. It was opaque in two coats, but I added a third to try and even out some brush strokes. There are still a few visible streaks even with three coats plus a top coat, but this is more to do with the firm brush than a bad consistency polish.

EMBRACE THE GRAY

On to the medium grey, Embrace the Gray. Again, I used 3 coats for this swatch. Streaking wasn't as bad as Cement the Deal, but still there.

OPI 50 Shades of Grey Collection Dark Side of the Mood Swatch

DARK SIDE OF THE MOOD

Dark Side of the Mood is my favourite of the collection and the stand out that I mentioned earlier. It's an almost black grey with a blue tint and just up my street! This swatch is 3 coats and I don't know if you can tell from the pictures but it has a really interesting waxy finish. I think this is a little nod to leather/latex and I just really like that little detail.

OPI 50 Shades of Grey Collection Romantically Involved Swatch

ROMANTICALLY INVOLVED

Romantically Involved is a very sultry red shade. Not your usual bright red, it's cool toned has just a hint of black. There's never that much to say about a Red polish - either it's your kinda thing or it's not - although I was impressed with the coverage on this one. This swatch is 2 coats with top coat.

OPI 50 Shades of Grey Collection Shine For Me Swatch

SHINE FOR ME

Shine For Me is really not for me! It looks absolutely awesome in the bottle but I just don't like the look of it on my nails. It's a clear base packed with incredibly fine silver glitter and slightly larger blue glitter. It's not a full coverage glitter but it's too dense to be a pretty, subtle topper. I used 2 coats over Cement The Deal and sponged it over the tips on Romantically Involved. It does look better as a gradient but still, not for me.

OPI 50 Shades of Grey Collection My Silk Tie Swatch

MY SILK TIE

I was hoping My Silk Tie would be an opaque enough foil to use for stamping but no such luck. It's quite sheer and there's still VNL (Visible Nail Line) after 2 coats so I added a third for full opacity. Streaking is no more than you'd expect from a chrome finish polish and drying time was good.

I had high hopes for this collection and although it wasn't a complete let down, it could have been better. The cremes are nice enough, Romantically Involved is a very sexy red and Dark Side of the Mood is going to get a lot of wear from me (if you just get one from the collection - make sure it's that one!) but I could skip the sheer chrome and strange glitter,

Lots of Love!!!
